Build up your company’s intranet

December 8th, 2010

That’s not a misprint. In the world of computer networking, there are a variety of different types of linked computers. The Internet is a global computer network that is composed of other networks from a variety of fields, including private, public, corporate, government, and academic corners. In contrast, an intranet is a private computer network set up within an organization. If you think that the Internet will take care of all your organization’s needs, think again. There are a number of benefits to using such a network, not the least of which is security. Why share your company’s data over a global network, even an encrypted one, when you can send it over a private channel? An intranet is built in much the same way as the Internet, only on a smaller scale. It includes HTTP web service protocols, SMTP e-mail capabilities, and FTP file transfer. The basic client-server model is also a good way to describe most intranetsa number of servers provide resources which can be requested by a number of clients. On the internet, the number of clients is unimaginable. On an intranet, it is limited to people with the right clearance within your organization.Companies that have set up intranets report increased productivity in their workforce, since it’s easier for individuals to find the information relevant to their particular roles. Such networks also improve communication between different workers and groups within the company, including upper management. This is even more important when companies or organizations have branches around the countryor even the world. It’s easy to see how existing operations can be improved with an intranet, but such a network also opens the door for new advantages that are only possible thanks to its unique features. New applications can be developed over the intranet that aid day-to-day operations in previously unimaginable ways. The ability to specifically target the Intranet to your users (as opposed to the more general users of the Internet) reaps benefits at all levels through the organization. If your company hasn’t yet set up an intranet, consider whether it might be a good idea. I think you’ll be pleased with the results.
